Britain and the European Union have expressed concern over the current situation in Bangladesh and have called for immediate steps to preserve democracy in the country.

Students of the country were protesting against reservation in government jobs in Bangladesh since July 2024.

This movement became quite fierce and violent and more than 300 people were killed in July 2024 itself.

In July 2024 itself, Sheikh Hasina deployed the army to deal with this movement, but it did not have much effect on the movement.

The students of Bangladesh had appealed for a civil disobedience movement from Sunday, 4 August 2024. In this, people were appealed not to pay all government taxes.

On Sunday, 4 August 2024, there was large-scale violence in Bangladesh and about 90 people died in it, while on Monday, 5 August 2024, the police have confirmed the death of 20 people.

Sheikh Hasina's son Sajeeb Wajed Roy told the BBC World Service's programme Newshour that his mother had already decided to step down on Sunday, 4 August 2024.
