Ace pistol shooter Jitu Rai staged a remarkable comeback to clinch the bronze medal in the 10m air pistol event for India's fourth podium finish in the ongoing ISSF World Cup here today. The 29-year-old shot a total of 216.7 in the eight-man final to finish third on the podium.
The Asian Games and World Championships silver-medallist was languishing at the seventh position after the end of the first competition series that included an 8.8. But he clawed his way back with two 10.6 and a 10 in the second competition series.
At the end of that series, Rai was placed sixth with a total of 98.7. He managed to maintain the status quo even as the final entered the elimination stage at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range. He shot two 10s in the following shots to continue his gradual ascent.
The Army man roared back to contention with a couple of 10.6 and ensured a bronze with a 9.9, finishing ahead of China's Zhanyi Xu (197.9). With a lead of 0.1 point over Vietnam's Xuang Vinh Hoang, Rai was in the hunt for a silver but an 8.6 meant he had to be content with the bronze.
The gold went to Japan's Tomoyuki Matsuda with a world record total of 240.1 points, while Vietnam's Xuan Vinh Hoang claimed silver with 236.6 points. The other Indian shooters in the fray in the air pistol event -- Omkar Singh and Amanpreet Singh -- failed to cross the qualification stage.
Sachin Tendulkar cast his vote for BMC elections 2017 with wife Anjali.
But all is not well with the team, which made headlines as one of the greatest sporting underdogs just a few months ago.
The team was knocked out of the FA Cup by third tier Millwall and is under threat of relegation from the Premier League.
Al Jazeera's Lee Wellings reports from Leicester.
Unlike auctions from the earlier seasons, the 2017 edition was pretty swift as teams had their strategies in place and went all out for who they wanted. And at the of the day, which saw intense bidding wars, a total of 66 players were sold with Rs 91.15 crores spent on them. While there were the expected the battles across tables, there were a few surprises as well, with the likes of Ishant Sharma and Irfan Pathan finding no bidders. Asghar Stanikzai and Imran Tahir joined the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara and Marlon Samuels, to remain unsold.
Yet, the story of the day was Ben Stokes going towards Rising Pune Supergiants for Rs 14.5 crore while uncapped players like T Natarajan, K Gowtham – the Karnataka all-rounder, were among those who raked in the big money. Other Indian youngsters who did well were Varun Aaron (2.8 cr), Mohammed Siraj (2.6 crore) Karn Sharma (3.2cr), Aniket Choudhry (2cr) and M Ashwin (1 cr).
Among the teams Gujarat Lions, Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians have the largest squads featuring 27 players while the Kolkata Knight Riders have the smallest with 23.
KKR made some really smart buys and filled the slots they required with some quality death bowlers and some back-up at various departments. They knew what they wanted and they went all out for it. It was a good strategy that they employed. Meanwhile the Delhi Daredevils too went to fill up their squad with talented pacers which included Pat Cummins for Rs 4.5 crore and Kagiso Rabada for 5 crore.
The defending champions, Sunrisers Hyderabad, knew that their spin department was a bit under par and went all out for it.
While Kings XI Punjab went for the likes of Eoin Morgan for 2 crores and added the pace trio of T Natarajan for Rs 3 crores, Matt Henry for Rs 50 lakhs and Varun Aaron for Rs 2.80 crores. Martin Guptill was another valuable asset for Rs 50 lakhs for the team which lacked a bit of depth in the batting unit.
Among others the Gujarat Lions scouted local talent and filled up their domestic quota. One smart buy for them was that of Darren Sammy for a price of Rs 30 lakhs.
For Mumbai Indians it was Mitchell Johnson for 2 crores, K Gowtham for 2 crores, Karn Sharma for Rs 3.2 crores were the big buys.
But it was the debutant from last year, RPS, which made all the noise with the addition of Ben Stokes and further bolstered their squad with the likes of Dan Christian (Rs 1 Cr), Milind Tandon (Rs 10 Lakh), R Tripathi (Rs 10 Lakh), Manoj Tiwary (Rs 50 Lakh), Lockie Ferguson (Rs 50 Lakhs).
As far as the Royal Challengers Bangalore are concerned, after this years auction, they finally seem to have a well-balanced unit with the addition of Tymal Mills ,Aniket Choudhary,Pawan Negi, Praveen Dubey Billy Stanlake.
At least 17 football fans died in a stampede at a stadium in northern Angola, police said, adding that scores of other spectators were injured, many of them seriously. Panic spread through the crowd at the match in the town of Uige between Santa Rita de Cassia and Recreativo de Libolo in Angola's domestic league season.
"There was a blockage at the entrance to the January 4 stadium... this obstruction caused multiple fatalities -- 17 deaths, and there are 56 injured in the hospital," police spokesman Orlando Bernardo yesterday told AFP. He added that there were an unknown number of children among the dead, and that hospitals were treating those injured.
Police said hundreds of fans had tried to enter the already packed stadium to see the match, causing a crush that pushed some people to the ground. Many of the dead were trampled to death or suffocated. "While the players were on the field, outside fans were trying to get into the stadium and a gate probably gave way to the pressure of the crowd causing several people to fall who were literally trampled on by the crowd," said the Recreativo de Libolo club in a statement on its website. "There are already 17 confirmed dead and at least 59 wounded... (this was) a tragedy without precedent in the history of Angolan football."
Some witnesses said many fans did not have tickets to the match, while other reports said that spectators inside the stadium were not aware of the stampede until it was over. Angola, ranked 148 in the FIFA world rankings, is a minor power in African football. The country has been relatively closed to the outside world under the authoritarian President Jose Eduardo dos Santos who has ruled since 1979.
Football has a tragic history of stampedes and stadium deaths, often blamed on lack of crowd control, dangerous venues and spectator behaviour. In 2009, poor crowd control in Abidjan caused 19 deaths before a 2010 World Cup qualifier between hosts Ivory Coast and Malawi. A stampede at the Accra Sports Stadium in Ghana in 2001 resulted in 127 deaths.
At that game, supporters angered by their team's defeat threw projectiles and broke chairs. Police threw tear-gas grenades, triggering a stampede. In May 1964, 320 people were killed and more than 1,000 injured during a stampede at a Peru-Argentina match at Lima's National Stadium. Fans could not escape the crush and were trampled or asphyxiated.
Records in Test matches are falling like nine pins as Indian skipper, Virat Kohli, continues his rich vein of form with the willow. Friday saw his love for breaking records go on to another chapter as Kohli has become the first batsman in the history of Test cricket to register four double centuries in four successive series.
He surpassed this record as he reached his double century in the second session of Day 2. In the process he overtook the joint record of three 200’s held by the legendary Sir Don Bradman (1930-32) and the ‘Wall’ Rahul Dravid (2003-04). Kohli’s streak began on India’s tour to West Indies last year.
However, this is just one of the many records that Kohli has managed to break and the way he is wielding his bat right now; it seems like he will carve his own niche in world cricket that many might struggle to reach.
When he had taken over the reigns from MS Dhoni in the longer format of the game, no one doubted his abilities, but his rather modest Test record at that point was something that needed to be worked upon. Though, he immediately set the records straight as he became the first player to notch up three successive hundreds as a Test captain.
He scored two hundreds on his debut as a captain debut in Adelaide before the ton at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
He also scored the most runs by any visiting Indian batsman in Australia and ended the series with 692 runs. At the end of 2015, Kohli had hundreds, but hadn’t quite converted it into double tons.
But 2016 proved to be the turning phase in Tests for King Kohli and at the end of the year, he had three double hundreds, one each against West Indies, New Zealand and England. This was a sign that Virat Kohli as a Test batsman, had finally arrived on the world stage.
The last year also saw Kohli smashe 133 boundaries in Tests, the most by any Indian captain in a calendar year. He went past Tendulkar’s tally of 131 fours in 1997.
His batting average went past 50 for the first time in Tests and thereby became the first batsman to have an average of 50 or more across three different formats at a given point of time.
Meanwhile. as his recent love for double hundreds continues; only one player now has more two-hundred-plus scores as captain than Kohli’s four and that is Brian Charles Lara. He presently shares the record of four double hundreds with the like of Don Bradman, Graeme Smith, Michael Clarke.
This statistics looks even more astounding when you compare the record of the previous 31 captains for India who have combined together to score only four 200-plus scores.
Virat Kohli now has 9 Test tons as the captain of Indian captain which means that he has equaled Mohammad Azharuddin’s record and is behind only Sunil Gavaskar (11) now.
In another record when Virat Kohli finally fell for 204 the first innings in Hyderabad, he managed to amass 1168 runs and thereby broke the previous record of most runs scored by a batsman overall in a home season (1105 runs by Virender Sehwag in 2004-05). While Sehwag had scored those runs in 17 innings, Kohli did it in only 15 innings.
Kohli’s highest score of 235 in Tests is the highest score by an Indian captain in Tests as he went past MS Dhoni’s 224 against Australia in 2013.
He is also the First Indian Test captain to score a double century in overseas Tests.
Earlier, Kohli also became the 1st Indian to hit 3 double-tons in a calendar year. Before Kohli, only four Indian batsmen had hit 2 - Kambli (1993), Rahul Dravid (2003), Sachin Tendulkar (2004 and 2010) and Virender Sehwag (2008)
Incidentally, another statistic which will leave you in awe is that Kohli has converted all his previous five centuries to a 150-plus score and four of them are now double centuries.
En-route to his hundred against Bangladesh on Day 1 of the ongoing one-off Test he also managed to score hundreds against all the seven Test playing nations. The only one’s not featuring in the list are Pakistan and Zimbabawe against whom he is yet to play a match.
His favorite opponent continues to remain Australia and this is reiterated by the fact that in 12 matches he has scored 1276 runs, with a highest score of 169 and an average of 60.76 and also slammed , slammed 6 tons.
Sometimes players have buckled under the pressure of captaincy but for skipper Kohli statistics paint a completely different picture -
Kohli as captain: 23 Tests, 2261 runs, Average 68.51, 9×100, 4×50. Highest Score- 235.
Other milestones -
First Indian captain to register nine Test wins in a calendar year
First Indian captain to register five successive Test series wins
First Indian to aggregate over 1000 Test runs in a calendar year since Rahul Dravid, who made 1145 runs in 2011
Virat Kohli Last 10 Test Centuries: 204, 235, 167, 211, 200, 103, 147, 169, 141, 115,
Former comptroller and auditor general of India Vinod Rai, who has been appointed by the Supreme Court to lead a four-member panel of administrators to look after the day-to-day functioning of the Board of Control for Cricket in India has said that the administrators will work to ensure that the game of cricket has a good administration and called himself a 'nightwatchman'.
Vinod Rai said that he was honoured to have been appointed by the apex court to look after the administration of BCCI, the body which governs cricket in India.
"It is a great honor which the Supreme court has bestowed upon the 4 of us to look after the administration of BCCI," Rai said.
Lauding his co-administrators, eminent historian Ramachandra Guha, financial executive Vikram Limaye and former captain of the Indian women’s cricket team Diana Edulji, Rai said that he is part of an eminent team which will be able to look after the administration of cricket during this transitional phase.
"A very eminent team has been put together to ensure a smooth transition to an elected body and I hope we will be able to do that," he said
Widely considered as symbol of the anti-corruption movement in India, Vinod Rai used a cricketing analogy to describe his position.
"The committee is very eminent, you cricketing people will call nightwatchman to ensure the smooth functioning," Rai told.
He further said that the four administrators need to look into the Lodha Committee recommendations and then work towards ensuring the smooth implementation of the proposals.
"Once we will familiarize with the recommendations of the Lodha Committee and we know the job functioning then one will be able to work to ensure that cricket has a good administration," Rai said.
Fast bowler Ashish Nehra claimed three wickets as he combined with Jasprit Bumrah to choke the England batting and set up India's series levelling five-run win in the second Twenty20 international in Nagpur, India on Sunday.
Chasing 145 for victory, England needed eight off the final over but Bumrah claimed two wickets and gave away just two runs to help the hosts level the three-match series at 1-1. The final match is slated in Bangalore on February 1.
India pulled it off. After trailing for most part of the match, India managed to win the second T20 international against England by 5 runs even after just making 144 in their innings.
England’s chase was always on course except for the early two wickets and the great death bowling by Jasprit Bumrah and Ashish Nehra. Ben Stokes and Joe Root took England to the target before Nehra dismissed the former with England needing 26 off 18 balls.
Nehra gave away 16 runs off the penultimate over and Bumrah had to defend 8 off the final over. England had six wickets in hand but Bumrah dismissed Root on the first ball and Buttler off the fourth and then defended 6 off the final ball to bowl India to series levelling win in Nagpur.
Roger Federer has won his 18th Grand Slam title and put some extra distance on the all-time list between himself and Rafael Nadal, the man he beat 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in a vintage Australian Open final on Sunday.
It was the 35-year-old Federer's fifth Australian title, his first at a major since Wimbledon in 2012, and it reversed the status quo against his nemesis, Nadal.
Federer had lost six of the previous eight Grand Slam finals he'd played against Nadal, and had only previously beaten the left-handed Spaniard in 11 of their 34 matches.
Both players were returning from extended layoffs for injuries - Federer the left knee; Nadal the left wrist - and were seeded 17th and ninth respectively.
Nadal remains equal second with Pete Sampras on the all-time list, with the last of his 14 majors coming at Roland Garros in 2014.
